One Hundred and Ninety Three Children

CockthorpeThe church of Cockthorpe is now maintained by the Norfolk Churches Trust and is therefore only used for the occasional service and not always open.

However a key can be obtained from a nearby house.

Inside the church are two monuments to Sir James Calthorpe.

The first is a Jacobean Tomb Chest and the second an alabaster and marble monument.

Sir James Calthorpe died on the 16th of June 1615 at the age of 57 and was survived by his wife Dame Barbara.

During their life together, they had eight sons and six daughters, who married and had sons and daughters of their own.

The alabaster and marble memorial states that after the death of her husband, Dame Barbara was much comforted with the sight of 193 of their children and their offspring!.

She died at the age of 86 on 3rd of November 1639, having enjoyed her family's contribution to the population.
