The Village Signs of East Anglia

The counties of Norfolk and Suffolk in the United Kingdom have a tradition of adorning thier villages with ornate sign posts, which depict something of the village’s past, be it fact or legend, and often reflect traditional trades or historical events.

These signs can be found on the village green, or at the entrance to the village, or in some cases in someone’s front garden! They come in all shapes and sizes and in a myriad of different colors; some are designed by children and range from the simple to the elaborate; some are very old and some have been reworked for the new millennium.

They are well worth ferreting out if you visit East Anglia, as it is always interesting to discover the history behind some of the less obvious scenes portrayed.

A few books have been written on the subject, that describe the signs and their meaning, but many of the signs have been changed or updated since these were published. This site does not attempt to provide the history but is simply a reference library of photographs of the signs.
